the best pedals for mountain biking
Review by AMP
Replaced my road pedals with the XTR pedal. The XTR pedap is lighter, more reliable click and realease, and easier to use since they are double sided. Makes riding much more enjoyable, especially in high traffic arreas when not being able to click-in can be dangerous.

I have had several Shimano pedals in the past, finally upgraded to XTR and very pleased with the purchase. The Daily Special deal helped seal the deal.

These just plain work like all other Shimano pedals, get them and you have one last thing to worry about, concentrate on the climb!

On eggbeaters for a long time, trying these for hoped easier clipping in than Candys during cyclocross.
So far
- Had to crank down pretty tight to not come unclipped. Eggbeaters have lots of float before releasing.
- Don't shed mud as well
- Some sharp edges needed filing down
- Good compatibility with gym bikes
- Will probably last much longer than eggbeaters.

I used road bike pedalscleatsshoes and I hated them!!!! Could not walk around and when stopping at a traffic light the hard plastic cleats would slip on the asphalt and with road oil leaking from cars the cleats were very slippery. Switched to MTB shoescleats with solidstiff sole. Tried several different pedals and went to these and never looked back. Love these and would not use anything else. Not I can walk around and put my foot down without slipping and sliding. Shoes click right in these pedals with no problem. Light pedals!!!!!!!!

The pedals are bomb proof but I use then on touring bike with shoes I can walk in. I bought an extra pair for a rainy day or a new bike. More bike stuff in the garage cannot hurt...

Sheds mud lighting fast. Easy to setup and readjust tension when needed. My go to pedals because they last longer than your bike will.

After trying multiple pedal types in the last two years (including Campagnolo Pro Fit), I am convinced SPDs are the best, and these are the best SPD pedals I've used. They are very quick and easy to click into, tight enough to keep your foot firmly on the pedal but easy to get out of with a sideways twist. I had to loosen the adjustment screws initially but they're really perfect - no need to flip the pedal over to engage the cleats. I've had them apart and they are very easy to maintain and adjust. They may be race pedals, but I intend to use them with MTB type shoes so that I can walk in them - no need to carry extra shoes on a bike tour.
