Solid Tire - Very Durable Studs
rating

I have been searching for a durable studded tire for a couple of seasons now and think I found the holy grail in this tire. The problem I've had with other tires is that the studs wear out really fast on pavement. Last year I wore the studs on a brand new set of tires right down to rubber in 6 weeks (about 500 miles of city commuting). I installed a new set of Schwalbe Marathon Winter Studded tires on my commuter bike about 4 weeks ago and they are performing beautifully. They have about 300 miles on them so far and I can only just barely detect the tiniest amount of wear on the center-most studs - the ones that have maximum contact with pavement. I expect these tires to last several seasons.

Gives me confidence to ride year-round

These tires allow me to go out when the temperatures are hovering around freezing without worrying that I will be taken down by black ice. I've had two rides now where the conditions would have been too slippery for my regular tires. The first was when the paths were covered with about 12 inch of snow and the asphalt sections by road crossings were icy. The other was when there had been light rainsnow overnight. I was riding on hilly and rough country roads with the temperatures around freezing. No slipping or sliding whatsoever.

The thing to remember with studded tires is they will abrade surfaces they come in contact with such as the interior of your car -( After one mishap, I now use bath towels to cover the tires where they come in contact with my vehicle. I prefer not to use a bike rack for a variety of reasons.

Very Robust Fast-Rolling Winter Tire
rating
by GTB

I bought these to use this coming Winter on my commuteradventure bike, so I don't have any time on them in the snow andor ice yet. I did do the recommended 20 mile break-in with them mounted on the commuter and rode to work and back for about a week. They handled fine on the pavement. They sound like frying bacon on the bare pavement. The weird thing is that I set some PR's in Strava on my commutes. Coincidence? Perhaps, but it is a testament to how well they roll.

AWESOME Snow Tires

I used these tires on my cross bike during the 20162017 winter season in Central Oregon. They were perfect on cold morning when there was a layer of frostice on the road. They even handle a frozen snow that had turned into thick ice. Even the rubber compound has a lot of grip, reminds me of my stud-less tires on my car. They will go onto my bike for the 20172018 winter season.

Traction when you need it

Yes, they're heavy but hey, when it's snowy and icy they grip like Velcro. Plus, during the winter you get all benefits of an high intensity interval at slower speeds which had two additional upsides. One, slower speeds mean less windchill, and if you do slide out, slower lessens the chance of injury.

Great Traction on ice moderate traction on snow extremely heavy

After competing an entire winter commuting in Omaha I finally feel qualified to comment on the tires. First the upside, these tire give extremely high traction on ice comparable to a set a quality road race tires on dry clean pavement. The good news ends there, this tire is a fair but not particularly impressive performer in snow on snow still quite easy to loose control but manageable. Unfortunately if conditions are anything short of snowy or icy outside these tires are nearly unbearable. The studs stab into the concrete on dry days resulting in very low traction and high rolling resistance along with an extremely annoying rasping sound. These tires are also extremely heavy. This tire is also very stiff yielding a harsh ride in most conditions. I probably would have switched often on good weather days if these were not the most difficult mountunmounting tires I have ever used. This is a great tire if you spend most of your time riding on frozen lakes or other extreme condition but a poor choice for most everyone else.

Have been running these on a hybrid commuter bike in mixed snow and ice. Work best on hard-packed snow and black ice. No issues on dry pavement other than a bit lethargic and sounds like running over rice krispies. The reflective trim is brilliant at night. Overall very happy with these tires.

The tires are expensive, but work great. They make quick work of ice and reasonable snow. I haven't tries them in anything over 4 inches of fresh snow yet. They give me confidence on the hills when there is ice present.

Excellent snow tire for commuting on a 'cross bike

This tire had great traction for most conditions, the exception being hard packed snow that had been driven over by vehicles. The tires were easy enough to install and remove when the snow went away. I ran pretty low tire pressure in these so that I could get the most traction possible out of them. I have no idea what these feel like on non-snowy roads, as I only used them to commute with when we had good snow coverage. The largest downside to these tires is the price. I like Schwalbe tires, (I typically run marathon supremes), but they are quite expensive. I have always gotten great mileage out of their tires though, and seeing as how these are seasonal tires, I will probably have them for a very long time.

I mounted these tires on my commuter bike and instantly turned it into something like a 4WD bike. It works great on black ice and ice-slick roads. On regular snow, it does great up to about 2 inches, then I choose to drive my car. Well worth the cost, if you are crazy enough to ride when the weather is cold and the roads are slick. I am.

If these tires have a limit, I haven't found it yet. I bought these for my cyclocross bike so I could train all year in Colorado Springs.

I have intentionally looked for the worst conditions possible- wet ice, slushy ice, 4 of snow, mud, frozen trails with icy obstacles- these tires have not slipped once.

There is a slight high frequency hum when you ride the on pavement, and a touch more rolling resistance than usual, but not bad.

They are not cheap, but they deliver the goods. Highly recommended.

Makes winter riding on a touring bike possible!

I've been riding these tires for about a month now, from the middle of December to late into January in northeastern Minnesota. I've ridden them in everything from dry, sandy pavement to black ice conditions and packed snow. The 35mm width is pretty narrow in packed snow, but that is unusual because the roads are plowed almost all of the time. The narrower width rolls nicely and they can squeeze in the chain stays of my touring bike, whereas anything wider wouldn't. I suppose I have over 250 miles on them. I decided to get them because I wanted to continue to commute all winter long, and I'm getting a little too old to go down on the ice. The tires work wonderfully, I can't imagine riding in the tires with fewer studs. I was worried that the tires wouldn't roll very efficiently, but I was pleasantly surprised. You can steer out of an icy rut, but I still would not corner at high speeds in a black ice intersection! The carbide studs are all still there and show no signs of wear. The reflective stripe on the side adds some safety, which is a good idea for riding in low light conditions. I'm a happy commuter!

Put these bad boys on my single speed foul weather commuter - they work a lot better than my slicks, that's for sure. Boulder has had more ice than snow this year, and these tires bite really well on both surfaces at pretty good speeds. Of course it get's a little sloppy in deep and variable snow, but it's hard to imagine a tire that wouldn't. I lost a decent amount of studs, but again, I imagine this is normal. Heavy and slow for sure, but it just makes for a better workout. Overall, very happy I made the purchase.

I've had so much fun with this set of tires this winter. I thoroughly recommend them.

The studs are enough to ensure grip under icy conditions and they're in the right places to make sure you can get out of ruts easily, which is what you need to avoid falling. I've used them in snowy conditions. You won't have a problem up to 6 inches, then it starts getting really fun. They perform well under dry conditions. Of course, there's a noticeable drag, that's why I just ride my other bike when it's dry.

Have fun!

What Ice?

I live in Michigan and we get freezethaw cycles all winter. I slapped a set of these onto my old trusty cross bike. I used to be hesitate to ride when I knew ice was present on the paved roads or my favorite dirt roads. Not any longer. These give you the confidence to ride without thinking about that next hip breaker crash. Just be careful with rutted ice. You get stuck in one you may get a closer view of the groundice quickly. Ride them at the lowest pressure when the road gets really icy and rutted. This will bring more spikes into contact with the ice. They are heavy but I don't plan on putting them on my TT bike. Price is high but have you priced out a hip replacement lately?

I feel more confidant on the bike than on foot since I mounted these tires. After falling on black ice last winter I was apprehensive this year but these tires have me back in the saddle again. Rolling resistance about the same as riding a mountain bike on asphalt. Defying ice and snow, I cheerfully go where one would not dare on normal road tires.

This is my first time riding studded bicycle tires. I commute to work year-round on a cross-style bike. I've put these on for the winter. They're giving me confidence to deal with the frozen puddles on the road that are common in NJ on cold mornings. I haven't had a chance to try them in the snow yet, but they feel like they'll do the job if I'm caught at work with snow falling. (I don't typically try to share the road with NJ drivers if there's snow on the ground, that would be a bit too exciting.) The tires are naturally heavier and slower than road tires. I'm riding about 2 mph slower on my commute than with the road clinchers. The studs do contact the road surface slightly, even when riding in a straight line. That makes them a bit noisy, but not uncomfortably so. The reflective sidewall stripe is a nice touch.

They're a little spend, but they are very effective, especially when run at lower pressure. Commuted daily on roads and trails for two winters on first set, could possibly handle a 3rd winter but I got a new set anyway. Continue to love them.

Bought these tires so I could ride my CX bike all winter and they handle better than I had hoped for. My experience with them is they handle the ice exceptionally well and cut through snow like a knife. Last ride was on shear ice with water running over it from the melting snow. It was to slick to stand on but these tires never slipped once. I previously tried the Innova on my MTB but they were so heavy and did not handle nearly as well as these tires do. These are much faster on the road. The Innova were like trying to pedal a monster truck

Great for ice, hardpacked snow and plowed roads

Summary When the streets are clear or plowed these roll well. They are wonderful in ice and hardpacked snow, but are lackluster in compacted snow. Carbide studs should last a long time. More aggressive tires would work better with those conditions, but would have too much rolling resistance for the majority of my riding conditions. My budget limits me to 1 set of tires and these fit the bill.

I use these tires to commute without fear of ice in the winters since that was the biggest problem i had with cyclocross tires - no studs. These tires are fantastic in the ice and hardpacked snow when they lowered to around 30psi. In fresh snow they were fine for me, but it hasn't been above 3-4 inches in a snowstorm this season. However, in compacted snow, such as unplowed roads cars have ridden over that has not melted and refroze, they left me feeling very uneasy as I had to fight to keep my bike in a straight line. In my area the snow usually doesn't stay like that for more than 2 days after a snowstorm, so I can live with that compromise. On dry pavement they are somewhat loud, but the rolling resistance isn't terrible. These tires make the tradeoff of lower rolling resistance instead of large knobbies and higher rolling resistance. If you are spending a lot of time in compacted snow these would not be the best choice.
