The future of aero.
With their Super-9 Carbon Clincher, Zipp has managed to harness the advantage of a highly efficient tire-to-rim interface, a design which actually gives this disc wheel a leg up over its tubular counterpart.
This is a made possible thanks to a totally unique clincher rim construction. At a full 27.5mm wide, Zipp's rim bed is specifically meant to seat a standard 23mm race tire. But they don't stop there—the rim's non-parallel brake track actually tapers down over a millimeter in order to create a streamlined transition between the tire and wheel. This small detail is actually huge, eliminating tire "bulge," and significantly reducing drag in wind tunnel testing.
Of course, the disc itself features the instantly recognizable dimples found on virtually all Zipp wheels. They call it ABLC™ (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control) technology, a design that's specifically engineered to promote smooth airflow across the wheel's surface, just like a golf ball.
The Super-9 is equipped with the 188 Disc hub which rolls on top quality Swiss-made steel bearings. Pre-load adjustment ensures silky smooth performance, and the 17mm oversized axle provides unmatched stiffness. Though compatible with 10/11-speed cassettes out of the box, the 188 Disc can also be converted for fixed gear use with a separate axle kit (not included).
The Super-9 Carbon Clincher Disc Rear Wheel is sold individually. Available in a Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10/11-speed compatible version only. Included accessories include a Zipp rim strip, quick release skewer, and Tangente Platinum Pro Evo Brake Pads. Actual weight: 1167 grams (weighed without quick release). Beyond Black finish.
Note: Due to the handmade nature of carbon rims, subtle variances in each rim's finish are inherent, in no way detract from performance or safety, and add to the beauty of the wheels. Zipp rims have no cosmetic layers, paint or fillers to hide the raw nature of the fibers. Cosmetic finishing is limited to bare essentials such as removing excess resin, bladders, and drilling the spoke access holes.
