Where there’s a will, there’s a whale.
Utilizing the science of biomimicry, Zipp turned to nature to see how it solves the problems of speed, control and efficiency. Drawing inspiration from the majestic marine mammal, the humpback whale, Zipp’s 454 NSW carbon clincher is fast and stable regardless of prevailing winds, marking an evolutionary step forward in rim design.
The thing that probably stuck out to you upon first glance was the undulating rim shape. The 53mm-deep rim grows to 58mm at the peaks of the HyperFoils™, achieving aerodynamic performance comparable to a 60mm-deep rim but with improved stability.. You might be wondering why Zipp designed such an irregular rim shape. The 454 NSW’s Sawtooth™ biomimetic rim shape is designed with two goals in mind: reducing aerodynamic drag while simultaneously reducing side force during gusts and crosswinds. If you’ve ever ridden deep carbon rims in a crosswind, you know how wildly unpredictable they can be. Returning to our aquatic mammalian friend the blue whale, Zipp noticed that the tubercles on its fins served a very distinct purpose: they provide the whale improved responsiveness while taking sharp turns. What the 24 HyperFoils do is create higher-frequency vortex shedding, even as the wheel pitches in yaw, resulting in much less powerful and more predictable vortices. Sounds simple, right?
The Sawtooth™ 454 NSW rims are laced to Zipp’s NSW-exclusive Cognition™ hubset using Belgian Sapim® CX-Ray ensuring efficient rolling through pedaling or coasting. Robust as they are fast, the Cognition hubset is assembled with Swiss bearings made to Zipp’s exact specifications.
These rims come with the updated HexFin™ Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control dimpling technology, improving aerodynamic performance and reducing complications from those pesky crosswinds. Zipp's ImPress™ NSW graphics are printed directly onto the rim, resulting in a stealth look that doesn't compromise the aerodynamics.
When you’re screaming down a descent at speeds, you need to know that when you squeeze those brake levers you come to a stop. Featuring their Center Lock-compatible Cognition Disc hubs, the 454 NSW's provide you more stopping power and greater control regardless of weather or descent duration. Period.
The Sawtooth™ 454 NSW rims are laced to Zipp’s NSW-exclusive Cognition™ Disc hubset using Belgian Sapim® CX-Ray ensuring efficient rolling through pedaling or coasting. Robust as they are fast, the Cognition hubset is assembled with Swiss bearings made to Zipp’s exact specifications. Inside the rear hub, their Axiom Clutch does away with the standard 3 pawl always-on ratcheting system, replacing it with a 36-tooth magnetic freehub body that disengages when you start coasting.
