The premium build quality, ergonomics and all-weather features that make Shimano's Alfine S7000/S700 series great for urban cycling also make the ST-R785 perfect for cyclocross, gravel, and road riding. Because the innovative SEIS (Shimano Electronic Intelligent System) shift technology is still based on their SIS (Shimano Index System), which has proved its superior gear changing characteristics over the years, no proprietary chains or cassettes are needed. In fact, the big difference is that with SEIS, the shifting action is provided for by electronic motors instead of mechanical cables. With effortless and precise shifting mechanics at the press of a button, its easier to keep a sturdy grip on the bars and concentrate on riding which is great for extreme weather or when you're simply exhausted from leaving your watts on the road. With many thousands of miles and years of testing, you can be confident that the Shimano electronic shift system will pull through in all conditions possible - rain, mud, low temperatures, cobble stone roads and combinations of all of these at the same time. With all its advancements, the operation of the levers work similarly to mechanical STI levers out of the box so you don’t need to re-program your mind for the SEIS.

Hydraulic brakes provide more stopping power with less effort (especially from the hood position) and with Servowave, the ST-R785 gives you the confidence needed for long descents and sketchy conditions with a lighter action. When you pull a Servowave brake lever, the initial pad travel is fast, so little lever movement is needed to bring the pads into contact with the rotor. The power multiplication factor then increases rapidly at the pad-to-rotor contact so more of the lever stroke is used to apply greater braking power with improved control. In addition to fantastic stopping power, the lever's Free Stroke, or the distance from initial lever position to pad contact, can be adjusted to suit any hand size, type of riding and individual rider preferences.

The Shimano Synchronized Shift system coordinates front and rear derailleur positions for optimal chain lines with a single shift. With apps available for PC, smartphone and tablets to set up and customize operation, its never been easier to tune your ride. Additionally, The E-TUBE platform's “Plug & play” and D-FLY wireless connections make it easier than ever to check the system's status, and apply customized settings to DI2 and Shimano Steps components.
