Garmin is at it again, building on their previous successes to deliver the Edge 1000.

With an updated and larger screen and a new set of features on top of the Edge 810's, the 1000 will help you take your cycling experience to new heights.

The most noticeable upgrade for the Edge 1000 is its 3.0 inch color touch screen. Rugged construction for daily use on the road, it is also optimized for use with gloves and in the rain so the changing of the seasons won't faze it one bit. An ambient light sensor also automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen for current conditions to maximize visibility.

Along with its bigger and better appearance, the Edge 1000 also boasts a number of new programed in features. For the competitor in all of us, the 1000 syncs with Garmin Connect's Segments (similar to Strava), providing real time results, leaderboards, and start/finish alerts right to your head unit. For more laid back rides, the Edge 1000 comes equipped with maps featuring the best cycling routes and points of interest. You can also design routes to best incorporate points of interest, or enter in a desired ride distance and choose from three suggested routes, all right from the device. In this digital world, the Edge 1000 can also display text, email, and call notifications from your cell phone (iPhone 4S or later required).

Truly standing on the shoulders of giants, the Edge 1000 also maintains the functions that made the previous Edge units great such as live tracking, Garmin Connect, GPS location, and metrics like speed, distance, cadence, heart rate, power, accent/descent, and grade (when paired with the appropriate ANT+ compatible sensors).

In the box:

  • Edge 1000
  • Preloaded maps
  • Mounts (standard and out-front)
  • Tether
  • USB cable
  • Manual

Features include:

  • High-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix®

  • Comprehensive performance monitoring: displays ride data (speed, distance, time, heart rate [strap sold separately], cadence [sensor sold separately], elevation, power [when paired with power meter], location and personal records)
  • Virtual Partner®, Virtual Racer™, interval training, courses, alerts, workouts, personal records
  • Heart rate-based calorie computation
  • Bike friendly routing with points of interest and route suggestions
  • Preloaded maps and the capacity to purchase/add addition maps
  • Garmin Connect Mobile compatible to instantly upload ride data via your smartphone
  • Incoming call/text alerts
  • In-ride challenges using Garmin Segments

Gravel grinding peace of mind. Works even when no cell phone reception. Thought iPhone was sufficient until 1st unknown ride, then no cell reception and was lost for next 60 miles. Love the large screen and the thing is way tougher than I would have thought.

I went to the Edge 1000 from 800 mostly for its larger screen. I really enjoy most of the same screen displays as I previously had but also like the ride features in which you can switch to select indoor, race , training etc and can't wait to get out on the road to see the live segments on Strava to when a segment begins and ends. I couldn't do that with my 800. Although I have just been using this on the trainer since I bought it I know from others that I ride with tell me it does a lot more .

The 1000 was to replace the loved 800. As a start, the 1000 is more reliable in connecting with all sensors. Display resolution is much better and touch display is more touch sensitive. Battery life is longer. All new connectivity features are a dream ie Auto upload to Strava and garmin via wifi, received SMS, ... GPS has been improved.

Got this for a trip in Europe. Loaded routes, and it was very easy to follow. Only downside was that I needed to buy the Europe map. Great to have the Russian GPS system as well. Great service at Western!

I haven't tried using this unit connected to my phone, but the stand-alone functionality works much nicer than the 805 I was using previously. The boot up time, menu operations, touch screen performance, display, and GPS performance were all noticeably improved. It was well worth the upgrade.

Use the Edge 1000 for road biking. Gives route details which were above my expectations. the new Garmin 1030 is supposed to be more accurate. The screen size is the difference.

Does everything I expected. GPS works great considering I ride in a lot of unfamiliar areas, and it can be synced with strava so you don't have to manually record your rides afterwords. Would recommend it, especially if you can find it on sale.

Upgraded from a Garmin Edge 800 to the 1000. The satellite tracking is more consistent, and the larger screen is an improvement. Turn-by-turn directions for routes is very solid. Very pleased with the unit.

Pluses

- performance like boot time, touch screen experience, GPS satellite acquisition all a big upgrade from the Edge 510

- screen tech is also a big upgrade

- download strava segments with 3rd party tool

Minuses

- mapping functions glitch

- Bluetooth connection to phone drops frequently

- SMS and phone functions don't seem to work

hopefully these will be resolve in future firmware updates. Would I buy again? Yes I would, but I am an early adopter...

I have had the 1000 for about week now and have mixed emotions about it. I had been using an Edge 800 for 3 years and I guess I was expecting more of a wow factor. At this point unless you really want one, some of the new features, I think the Edge 800 or 810 will still meet most peoples needs.

The 1000 paired up with my previous generation Garmin cadence/speed, heart rate, and Stages PM without a problem. After a 6.5 hour ride that ended with 30% battery left I am wondering how long the battery will really last. Once you have all the features going like Bluetooth pairing with phone and Shimano D-Fly box along with NAV I would expect the battery consumption to go up.

There are a number of bugs you can read about on the Garmin Edge 1000 forum. For me the Bluetooth drops with my iPhone 4s is the most noticeable, I have disabled Bluetooth for now.

I was happily using a Magellan Cyclo 315 but Magellan stopped supporting it. The Magellan is not compatible with Windows 10 which all computers except Macs use. To keep this from ever happening again I switched to Garmin. I have a Garmin Nuvi that is at least 6 years old and it is still supported by Garmin. I chose the Edge 1000 for several reasons. First is the size. With my 61 year old eyes I have no trouble seeing the screen on this. And it has tons of features and data. More than I actually use. However I lead a lot of club rides and with this I no longer use cue sheets. I simply download my routes into the Edge and follow it. When I approach my turn, on the bottom of the screen it will count down the distance in feet and time. It does not give an audible alert like the Magellan but that's nitpicking. The only reason I knocked off a star is the mount which is held on by rubber bands. For an item this expensive I expected a much more secure mount. To keep from losing it I spent the extra money and bought a K-Edge mount for it. I also purchased a quick release lanyard for it in case the bike ever falls over or is in a crash the Edge will still be attached to the bike. I highly recommend both extra purchases. When buying equipment this expensive you want to make sure it doesn't fall off the bike and get run over by a passing car.

Seamless integration with your devices and a plethora of information at your fingertips!!!!

I must admit . . . I'm a technology junkie, if you told me that this device was able to provide my horoscope (I'm a Capricorn, by the way, I enjoy fresh-baked bread and long, peaceful walks on the beach) and launch missiles against the former Soviet Union, I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Um, ok . . . I actually did purchase this without knowing those features.

Here's why this device is great - coming from the Garmin 510, the Garmin 1000 is like comparing a Kyocera 7135 smart phone (httpwww.pcmag.comarticle20,2817,719997,00.asp) to an Apple iPhone 5! The ability to quickly access pertinent features (turning GPS onoff is a breeze, for instance with the 1000. When the main screen launches, simply swipe down and there are multiple menus provided, one being to adjustturn off the GPS . . . no need to have it on when using the Kreitler rollers of Kinetic Rock n Roll). Data is automatically uploaded via wifi instead of needing to connecting the Garmin to the computer and upload results. The screen is clear, bright and vibrant. Using the the Garmin remote pushes the greatness even further . . . no more moving the hands from the bars to the computer to scroll through screens (spoiler alert, the remote works on the 510810 as well). I also purchased the Shimano Di2 D-Fly that communicates to the head unit what gear I'm currently in and what the Di2 battery level is . . . this thing is amazing!!!!

I haven't found any faults (yet) with my Garmin 1000. I'm glad I made the purchase and don't regret upgrading from the Garmin 510.

Came from a Garmin 510 and couldn't be happier

Going from a 510 (a good little device in its own right) to a 1000 is like graduating from a gas station cigarette lighter to a Zippo. The auto-brightness adjust feature is a marvel, the maps work just OK - still not as seamless and user-friendly as a car's GPS, let's say - but the very fact that I even have them make them an automatic upgrade over the 510. Now I no longer have anxiety about riding unknown roads or trying new routes. Battery life does seem on the low side - the device is a bit of a battery hog. Otherwise, would still make the upgrade 10 times out of 10.

Great product. Tons of information, probably more then I'll ever use. I don't have a power meter so don't use that part of it. Records all the data you could ever want. Mine has worked well with Bluetooth. Picks up every missed call while riding. Great ability to customize screens. Sometimes too many screens, find myself looking at unit more then watching road. Great maps, nothing better. Love the size. Fits perfect on my 130mm stem. Only issue I've had is with sweat landing on screen and changing it. Have avoided issue with locking screen, although that negates ability to scroll through info. All in all couldn't be happier. Not sure what else I would recommend other then the Garmin 1000.

Great upgrade

I upgraded from the 810 to 1000. I like the ease of connectivity to phone, wifi, setting up additional apps. I have not tested the beacon app yet. Although slimmer the 1000 has a slightly larger body and screen. I had to learn where the IQ apps are located on the 1000 once downloaded. It wasn't where I expected. It seemed the IQ button on the main screen would show them. Instead you have to swipe down on the screen and then swipe to the side..... Inconvenient.

This does not fit on the Bontrager Blendr low mount. 810 does. I have not been able to find a store with the hi mount in stock, so, I am limited to using the old style on the flat handlebars of the Trek Madone.... Which is slightly inconvenient.

One of the promoted features of the Garmin Edge 1000 is In this digital world, the Edge 1000 can also display text, email, and call notifications from your cell phone (iPhone 4S or later required). Please note that this feature no longer works on the Edge 1000 when paired to an iPhone. The actual display area does not seem that much larger than the 810, but the image is much clearer and easier to read. It also seems faster than the 810 for starting and for finding and holding satellites.

This is my third Gamin Edge. I have passed the other to my wife's bike and the oldest I donated to a young rider who could use it.

The 1000 has all I need and yet to Great screen for my older eyes and technology that allows me to switch bikes easily. Only a few rides so far. Had to go online for features but a labor of love.

Love the product.
