Hammer time.

Cycleops presents us with their fifth generation smart trainer with the Hammer Direct Drive Smart Trainer that's more refined and more realistic than ever. The direct mounting system saves your tires from wear and eliminates any annoying slippage during intervals while also making the Hammer much quieter than standard wheel-mounted designs. PowerTuned power measurement is built with PowerTap technology for &plusmin;2% accuracy up to 2000 watts, and integrated Bluetooth 4.0 and ANT+ FE-C wireless communication means you can use it with virtual training platforms like CycleOps VirtualTraining, Zwift, and TrainerRoad. A 20 lb flywheel creates a smooth riding experience that mimics real roads, while electromagnetic resistance means the Hammer can rapidly adjust to changing virtual road environments to further enhance the riding experience.

Thru-axle compatibility makes this trainer compatible with almost every bike in your stable, and folding legs make for a solid platform that slims down for compact storage. The front wheel tray has an integrated storage spot on the trainer itself so it doesn't take up additional space while also preventing it from getting lost.

130 mm / 135 mm quick release compatible. 142 mm / 148 mm thru axle compatible. 300 lb maximum rider weight. Shimano 8 - 11 speed cassette compatible. No cassette included. Communication with smart devices and laptops requires them to be equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 / ANT+ FE-C or the use of a separate dongle (not included).

Dimensions are 31" width x 19.5" length x 18.5" height. Closed dimensions are 8.5" width x 19.5" length x 18.5" height. Claimed weight is 47 lbs.

Its like really riding a bike. A little noisy, but bearable. No tire to slip on hard efforts. With dedication this has helped my performance on the bike dramatically.

I had previously used a Wahoo Kickr Snap as a smart trainer and began to experience issues with the flywheel (which are somewhat documented in the interwebs). As I am on a trainer for much of the winter and got hooked onto the video-game known as Zwift, I decided to give a direct drive trainer a chance. Overall, I am very pleased with CycleOps - very sturdy and well made. Carrying handle is nice and the feet fold in which is a plus because I am not allowed to leave everything in the living room when I train. No problems with connectivity with a Wahoo HRM and cadence sensor, nor with it talking via Bluetooth to an Apple laptop. Price point is steep, but would highly recommend if leaning towards direct drive for whatever reason.

The Hammer is a lot of fun. I switched from an older school LeMond Revolution and the change has been outstanding. The unit was easy to set up and connect to my phone or ipad. I use the CVT app and Zwift and the sync process has been pretty seamless. I like all of the compatibility options for regular skewers or thru axl wheelsets. Highly recommended.
