Did you know the first bike helmet was invented in 1975? Hopefully yours is a bit newer, but helmet manufacturers still recommend replacing your helmet every two to five years. For the month of May, we're offering a special in-store only promotion: bring in your old helmet* and receive select discounts on your purchase of a new helmet.

How can I tell when it's time to replace my helmet?

If your helmet has been in a crash or impact, it's definitely time to replace it! Even if you don't see any signs of cracking or breaking, the helmet may be compromised.

Sun, sweat, body oils, and exposure to environmental pollutants can degrade the helmet's components, so it's a good rule of thumb to replace yours every three to five years.

If you notice any cracks, bubbling, or blistering in the helmet's foam or plastic, it's time to replace it.

To figure out your size, wrap a flexible tape measure around your head, about 1 inch above your eyebrows. You can also use a piece of string, and measure that length with a ruler. If you're between sizes, look for a helmet with an adjustable dial, or consider wearing a cycling cap to help make the fit more snug.

A properly fitting helmet shouldn't move more than an inch side-to-side, or front-to-back, once fastened. If your helmet has adjustable side straps, tighten those so that each ear is in the middle of the "Y" created by the straps. Finally, tighten down the chin strap and open your mouth--you should feel the helmet tighten against the top of your head. Now get out there and enjoy the ride!

*Your used helmet must have a manufacturer's sticker indicating the helmet is 3 or more years old. Discount applied to MSRP.
