I ordered these because I have the mountain version (SH-WM61) and wanted road shoes. I use Crank Bros. egg beater pedals, which have cleats similar to conventional SPDs (as opposed to SPD-SL), and they are supposedly compatible. They do have the two hole option, but the bottom of the shoe is completely slick and hard, and once you mount the cleats it becomes IMPOSSIBLE to walk in them comfortably or safely. The simple solution is to order cleat adapters (in my case Shimano SM-SH40), which mount using the SPD-SL 3-hole pattern, and give you a stable, non-slip platform for walking. Inside the adapters the cleats are protected from wear, too. So everything worked out in the end, for an extra $20.
One other note I have pretty narrow feet, and with thin socks I'm maxed out on the cam adjustment. Otherwise the shoes are very comfortable and the bottoms are nice and stiff.
Thank you for your feedback.
