Keep the weather out and the warmth in.

The MW81 Cold Weather Mountain Shoe features a protective Gore-Tex exterior with a leather high top and built in Neoprene booties to keep your feet dry no matter how bad it gets out there. And, the dual thermal lining makes sure the warmth stays in. Tough fiberglass reinforced polyamide sole maintains grip in dicey conditions.

The SH-MW81 is compatible with SPD and other two bolt MTB cleats. Black.

Warm, indestructible, but maybe there's just no such thing as waterproof

These are serious shoes - they're super solid, stiff, and feel very durable. I wear Shimano MTB shoes usually and the fit is pretty much the same. While it hasn't gotten that cold here just yet I can already tell they'll be a huge improvement over my regular shoes in terms of warmth & insulation. That said, I got them mainly so that I could be done with wearing booties in the rain. The guy at the register talked them up and said another employee had used them a whole winter season and enjoyed dry feet throughout, and most reviews I'd read spoke highly of their waterproofing. I've used them on 3 or 4 commutes with steady rain, and I have to say I was disappointed about half the time. The very first rainy ride and my feet were wet (heel & toes). Not sopping wet, but definitely wet. Same thing happened on a different ride. But on a couple other rides they were dry, so who knows. Maybe it was the way the rain was shooting off my fenders that day, or the wind, or something else.

Ultimately they are a good winter shoe, and definitely more waterproof than what I have. But for $200 I'd hope for dry feet consistently.

Hey Dougpdx,

While these shoes aren't totally waterproof, quite a few folks at our store and warehouse use them for their winter commutes and like them. Our experiences are similar, though: good shoe, but water can get in.

We've found that if you're wearing rain pants or waterproof tights, you need to layer these over the top of the shoe to help prevent water from running into them. Tall socks can pull water down from your calves, but warmer socks tend to be taller...

In my experience, wearing a thick pair of wooly socks inside of a winter shoe like the SH-MW81 is the best bet, but since moving to Portland, I've given in to a philosophy of comfortably damp.

Warm but not that waterproof

Second time wearing these in wet snow and my feet were soaked in minutes. They did stay warm however, which is the most important thing. After reading reviews on similar products I gather this is pretty typical. Okay for cold weather and lightly wet conditions. Will not keep your feet dry in driving rain but then I guess nothing will.

I will never try a different shoe for year round commuting.

I am a 2.5k miles/yr commuter in Oregon. I no longer arrive to work with frozen toes from near freezing rides in the wet, mud or flooded bike paths. They are comfortable and good for walking. I once forgot to pack my regular shoes and ended up spending the entire work day wearing these shoes on a concrete factory floor. I also had a pair of the earlier earlier MW-80's and put 6,000 miles on them, 3 winters and two summers. The shoes held up great! (if it wasn't for the odor, wife made me get new ones), and these MW 81's are just as nice if not even better...

When I first tried them I was afraid I'd gotten a size too small. Once I got my feet in them I was pleasantly surprised that I had wiggle room for my toes. The deal is that the elastic on the top of the shoe is quite strong, so to get your foot in easily one must open the she straps completely, grasp the elastic with one hand while pulling the shoe on with the provided loop on the back, maybe even pushing down some, and your foot will slide right in.

The reason I bought these was the recommendation of my local bike store friend. I have been going through pull-on shoe covers which work on the top, but woe to you if you step in a puddle, plus they wear out with a little walking which I must do to get over some steep places - only good for a year or less. These shoes are swell as I can walk through puddles as stay dry. They are of excellent construction and I expect to be wearing them for years to come. I'll let you know how that goes.

We've had a frozen week and I stayed warm as toast over a couple of hours of 27f. Today it rained, and I simply tucked in my stretch pants into the top of the boot and clamped them in with the strong elastic ankle strap. By overlapping my rain pants over the top of the boots I stayed completely dry. Since I hose off the bottom and sides of my shoes after a muddy ride I have been used to having water leak in during that process. Not even that caused even a drop to get inside. I sort of wish the boot came up a little higher so I could feel more secure with the overlap, but I gotta say that these boots are all I could wish for. I'm one happy winter trail rider.

My feet have stayed warm and dry in these shoes in temperatures as low as 27'F. This is a sturdy, durable shoe for year round riders. I highly recommend this shoe, it is worth the extra money and is far superior to shoe covers.

A great shoe for cold weather commuting

This is a great shoe for bicycle commuters that are tired of cold feet. I have used these shoes in 30'F temperatures and they worked great and I am sure they will still keep my feet warm when the temperatures drop even further. For years I have arrived at work with cold feet using shoe covers over cycling shoes and that has not been a problem with these boots. I wish I had purchased these shoes long ago as it would have resulted in much more comfortable riding.

Keeping the Tootsies warm

I haven't got out in the wet yet but these are the ticket for the cold. 2-3 hours at 10 degrees F type of thing. I kept having issues with cold feet on night rides and these have worked better than the wool socks plastic bags that I had been using. I think they would keep your feet dryer in wet conditions but not completely dry but I haven't tested that yet

Buy This Shoe at least 2 Sizes Larger Then Your Usual Size

I wore a size 45 Shimano shoe for years. In regular shoes I wear a size 10.5 to 11. So I bought the size 47 and found the toe box narrow and tight with my toes with no space at the front of the shoe with a marino wool sock.

So I sent back the 47 and now have a 48. I presently breaking them in . The last of this shoe is definitely small or tight.

These may be the most comfortable MTB shoes I have ever worn. This shoe keeps your feet pretty warm and very dry. They have performed well in the Pennsylvania winter. Best w thick, wool socks.

Sturdy, warm boot-just as advertised

I haven't had a chance to fully put them through their paces yet, but they seem just as advertised-good quality, nice and warm (down to 19 degrees so far), and waterproof at least through a half-hour ride in medium rain. They're a bit stiff and clunky compared to cycling shoes, but then they'd have to be for what they give in return. You definitely need to look at the Shimano sizing chart since these seem to run a size smaller than other brands.

Comfortable warm shoe.

The past few years my feet have become increasingly sensitive to cooler weather. Where once I could cycle comfortably when the temperature fell into the forties, my feet now hurt even when its 55, assuming no sunshine. I have tried wool socks, shoe covers, battery operated feet warmers, and the problem remains even though some of the chill is reduced.

So this winter I bought a pair of Shimano winter cycling shoes (mountain shoes but I ride road) and my feet have been much warmer, even a mite toasty at times. It also has helped that this is one of the warmest daytime winters ever here in central California, although the nights are also colder. So, I have not been able to fully test them but they are definitely much warmer than the usual ventilated cycling shoe. They takes a few seconds longer to put on, and remove.I think the lowest temperature I have worn them at is about 40 degrees. They make cycling so much more enjoyable.I suspect they would also repel water, with an ankle cuff that seal quite well.

I also own some Shimano cycling sandals that are very pleasant to wear in hot weather.
