Customer Rating

With an impressive blend of performance and durability, the Handspun Shimano 105/Velocity A23 Rear Clincher Wheel is an excellent option for training or recreational riding.

Velocity's A23 rim is a relative newcomer to the road clincher market. The lightweight, wind slicing shape is borrowed from their popular Aerohead model, and an extra wide profile offers even more efficient aerodynamics when paired with a 23mm tire. The wider footprint also adds strength while delivering improved handling and a ride quality that many describe as "tubular-like."

At the heart of the wheel is the 105 5700 hub. Shimano's proven design is legendary for its blend of durability, smooth performance, loose ball bearing serviceability, and affordable cost. DT Swiss 14 gauge Champion spokes and nipples round out the impressive package.

The Handspun 105/A23 Rear Wheel features 32 spokes laced 3 cross. Hand-trued, tension-checked, stress-relieved and perfectly dished. Hub, spokes and rim are black with silver nipples. Includes Shimano quick release skewer. Compatible with Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10-speed cassettes. Size 700c (622mm ISO). 1070 grams.

I'm impressed with how much just a 4mm difference in rim width, for the A23 rim, can change ride feel. Nice ride feel with a 23 or 25mm tire, but also have a set of A23's on my snowfloodingnight bike with 35mm tires and they still feel pretty good. With 32 spokes and their moderately high weight no one is going to race these, but for non-competitive use I don't know of a better wheel for the price. I'm waiting now to see what kind of life I get out of the braking surface on the rim- so far looks to be wearing at a average rate.
