Touch and go.

Garmin's Edge 510 Computer takes a cue from their top tier 810 model, delivering the same convenient touchscreen interface, plus new "connected" features, all while maintaining the same powerful GPS enabled features of its predecessor.

So what exactly does this mean? Basically, the Edge 510 still tracks distance, speed, and altitude via GPS, just like the 500. This means you still get all the data you need to push your training to the next level. But the "connected" features are where this new computer really stands out. The 510 offers live tracking, auto uploads to social networking sites, Bluetooth/smart phone connectivity, and weather alerts. This updated model also supports activity profiles, allowing you to configure data and settings based on which your bike riding and which terrain is on the itinerary. This Bundle also includes Garmin's cadence sensor and heart rate strap, for extra data to optimize your training.

The 510 touchscreen display has been designed for easy operation with full fingered gloves and is built tough enough to withstand off-road abuse.

This Edge 510 base model includes the head unit and basic accessories only (see below), but is compatible with ANT+ compatible devices. A basic version without the cadence sensor and heart rate monitor is available separately as well.

In the box:

  • Edge 510
  • Mounts (standard and out-front)
  • Premium heart rate monitor
  • Speed/cadence sensor
  • USB cable
  • AC charger
  • Tether
  • Manual

Features/Functions:

  • High-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix®
  • GLONASS compatible, for improved performance in challenging conditions
  • Touchscreen and simple user interface: a 2.2" rugged and customizable color touchscreen, quickly find and view the most important data
  • New Connected features: live-tracking, instant uploads, social network sharing and weather updates
  • New Garmin Connect: instantly upload ride data via the Garmin Connect Mobile app on your phone
  • New Activity profiles allow you to configure data fields and device settings based on the types of riding that you do, and lets you switch between them by simply pressing the touchscreen
  • Comprehensive performance monitoring: displays market leading, comprehensive ride data (speed, distance, time, heart rate, cadence, elevation, power (when paired with power meter), location and personal records)
  • Advanced heart rate-based calorie computation
  • Sleek lightweight design
  • Training and motivational features: Virtual Partner ®, interval training, courses, alerts, workouts, personal records
  • Auto time zone
  • Barometric altimeter: for precise elevation, gradient, ascent and descent data
  • Zone training: heart rate zone training, supports five heart rate zones, seven power zones
  • ANT+™ wireless technology – wirelessly connect to heart rate monitor, GSC™ 10 speed/cadence bike sensor or ANT+ enabled power meter
  • Available with out-front mount for heads up display of your ride data
  • Battery: rechargeable lithium-ion, battery life: up to 20 hours
  • Water resistant to IPX7 (one meter of water for 30 minutes)
  • Weight: 2.8 oz (80 g)

Problems with 510

I couldn't wait to get my Garmin Edge 510 with the premium HRM and out front mount!! It was an upgrade from the Garmin Edge 500 I've been using for the past several years. I was looking forward to the new features and touch screen on the 510. I was also looking forward to the larger display.

Right out of the box, this unit disappointed me. After charging, I followed the on-screen directions to set it up. Here are some of the problems I encountered.

The touch screen isn't all it's cracked up to be. It is very hard to enter data in there. For instance, the set up asked my height and weight. When I touched the numbers on the screen, different numbers would be entered. It took several attempts to figure out exactly where to hit the screen to enter the correct number...and it wasn't exactly over the number.

There's a lack of clearly written, step by step directions that come with the 510. The directions are very vague and lack clarity and pictures.

Support on the Garmin website is very minimal as well. Once I had a hard time setting it up, I used the advice in the quick set up manual and went to the Garmin website, hoping I'd get more help. NOT!!

The display is very grainy and dim. The backlight is just OK.

After I struggled to get it part way set up, then I tried to go for a ride. I put the HRM on, and the 510 didn't recognize the monitor. It was asking me to enter the HRM code. There was no code anywhere on the HRM. I tried to turn off, then turn on the 510 in hopes it would pick up the monitor. No luck.

Next problem came with the cadence sensor. It wouldn't recognize it.

After spending nearly four frustrating hours trying my best to get the 510 to work, I boxed it up and sent it back and bought another 500. Within 10 minutes of taking the 500 out of the box, I had it up and running and I was on my way.

Save yourself the anguish and just buy the 500 or 800 series. I don't think the 510 and 810 have the software bugs worked out quite yet.

A quality training tool with excellent battery life

I use the Edge 510 for training and it works really well. It has easily programmable screens that can be customized to show time, speed, heart rate, cadence, etc. When synced with a smart phone it will automatically save ride info, for later study. I used to run my smart phone battery almost dead on long rides. Now it barely puts a dent in the charge.

Too complicated!!

I purchased this Garmin Edge 510 bundle to replace a Garmin Edge 500 I had on my other road bike. I sold the 500 in anticipation of getting the new 510. Mistake!! Let me tell you a few things about this product, and why you may want to consider sticking with the basics.

1. The directions for the Garmin Edge 510 are very vague. There's pretty much a lack of thorough written directions. What directions there are in writing, must have been done in China. You'd think with an expensive GPS computer, that someone from Garmin could write directions step by step from a user's point of view.

2. As I was having problems setting up the computer, I decided to visit Garmin's website for support. Again, not a very user-friendly website, just like the directions that came with it. The links they have pretty much take you back to the basic support page for the product and is pretty useless.

3. I bought the bundle with the premium HRM and cadence. The 510 would not recognize neither the HRM and cadence sensor.

4. The touch screen is not very good. Sometimes, I'd have to press very hard to get it to respond. There are a few setup screens that require you to input letter or numbers, but when you push on the numbers or letters directly, you may get a different letter than what you pushed. It took me several attempts to try to find the right spot to get the letter or number I wanted to input. Not good.

5. Too many features than I need. Maybe some other cyclists can use all the widgets this thing has, but I personally only care about the time I've been pedaling, distance, heart rate, and a few other bits of data.

6. Backlight not too bright. You have options how long you'd like the backlight to stay on, but I can tell you, when that backlight goes off, the 510 is pretty dim. The backlight button on the left hand side of the GPS is pretty hard to engage. I couldn't imagine trying to struggle to engage the light and still keep control of the bike.

After spending nearly four frustrating hours of trying to set up the computer, I gave up. I'm returning this product back to WBW and am going back to just getting either a basic 500 or possibly the 800.

Great Product

The Garmin 510 is a great product. However, I was expecting a little more considering the price. The touch screen in my opining does not feel at the level it should considering where today technology is. On the other side I can navigate the menu with the thickest gloves which is a plus. The resolution of the screen is very poor as well. Also, compare to the Garmin 500 I can read the screen of Garmin 500 easier. The screen is designed much brighter. I just think for the amount of money the product should offer more.

On the other side I enjoy the 510 and I had no problems with it so far. I have used it for about 60 days indoor and outdoor and performance wise is good.

Its OK but the touch screen is not up to standard

I had this about a week and the swipe screen was continually delayed and when trying to navigate the different screens it would inadvertently turn off. The screen was hard to read and adjust so I sent it back and got a 500 and I am extremely happy with the 500......

I bought the Garmin Edge 510 Bundle as an upgrade from my Edge 500. I really liked the 500 since that was an upgrade from a standard cycling computer I was using. The 510 is better with its upgraded features. The 510 is a bit larger than the 500 and it does make it easier to read the screen. The touchscreen is also a nice feature. I would definitely recommend the Edge 510 to anyone looking for a new computer.

This is my first cycling computer and I have to say that I'm impressed and overwhelmed at the same time. I was looking at the Wahoo system but decided to go with the 510 because it's proven. The one thing Garmin needs to do is add the ability to share to Strava from the Garmin Connect app. Plugging in every time to upload works great but gets old fast! You can do it Garmin!!!
