The Easton EC90 SL is a carbon clincher that rivals the durability and braking of an aluminum rim. The first thing Easton did was strengthen the tire bead hook sidewalls with a double layer of carbon. They are strong enough that they are the only tested carbon clinchers that survived Easton's test of dropping a metal anvil on the rim eight times from increasing heights. They also increased the rim strength by not machining the bead hook after molding which is a process many carbon clincher manufacturers undergo.
Easton wanted the wheel to have braking performance on par with an aluminum rim. The problem with a carbon braking surface is that it absorbs heat which can cause the rim to expand up to a millimeter and even cause a tire bead to pop off. To combat this, Easton added a Thermatec braking surface to resist heat buildup and provide excellent stopping power and brake modulation. The 38mm rim depth is a great middle ground between being aerodynamic and being light and handling well in cross winds.
Sapim bladed spokes also enhance aerodynamics. 18 spokes are laced radially in front and the rear has 24 spokes laced radially non-drive and 2X on the drive side. A bit of bling is then added with red alloy nipples. The R4 SL hubs use grade 3 hybrid ceramic bearings and feature a lightened freehub body and rear axle. Includes quick-release skewers, rim strips, and carbon-specific Swiss Stop yellow brake pads (the only pads recommended for use with this wheelset). Size 700c (622mm ISO). 1547 grams per set (weighed without included skewers).
