I can't afford Carbon wheels, and even if I could, my euro-grouch Belgian coachriding buddy says he'll never be seen training with me if I had them, which means I would need to buy a nice set of aluminum wheels for training with him and carbon for racing...well, you get the point.
When searching for a replacement set for my 4 year old, well-abused Easton EZ-90SL's, built for the
strong amongst us, I was interested in a similarly light, similarly sturdy wheelset, but thought I should check out what else is out there, instead of sticking with tried and true. I'd heard lots of good things about the somewhat smaller and quirkier AC brand, and after a bit of research (as no one I know in NYC has these, and I rearely see them here, research was reading online reviews), I decided to go for it. It didn't hurt that WBW was having a sale. That definitely sealed the deal.
IN short, they ride like a charm. No pre-load issues like I had with the Eastons you Easton owners know what I mean), the pawls are nearly silent, the bearings are smooth, the aero shape is stable and not overly affected by crosswinds. The whole system feels incredibly strong and stable, and the fancy rear-wheel lacing pattern feels secure in spite of looking so convoluted (which in the case is a good thing). I feel faster...plus the white rims look totally trick with my white frame. That matters right? Of course it does.
This is good looking tech, not just a flashy looking wheelset but a cutting edge aluminum wheelset designed to function at a top level and to do so looking pretty.
